Old Key West Cemetery

Old Key West Cemetery

I can’t be the only one fascinated with the dead. Chances are, you are too if you’re reading this. Visiting ancient graveyards with miles of tombstones are a favorite past time of mine. I have yet to visit the Old Key West Cemetery but when I do I’m sure I’ll have plenty of experiences to share. More than 100,000 people are buried here with many probably still lingering between life and death. But this isn’t you’re typical cemetery. Venture through the thousands of tombstones and read some of the interesting, even humorous, writings on them. Personal favorites seem to be those that read, “I told you I was sick” or “Devoted fan of Julio Iglesias.’ As witty and welcoming as this cemetery might appear, beware. Chances are you may have a run in with the well-known Bahamian woman who acts as the guardian of the graveyard. She firmly implements respect so make sure you don’t fool around on a grave or mess with the headstones. Many visitors have reported seeing this forbidding spirit coming toward them with an unpleasant facial expression. The cemetery is also the sight of the usual paranormal phenomenons like disembodied voices, shadow people and floating orbs of light.

Should you visit, make sure you go with good intent. This bustling graveyard is the home to more dead people than in some parts of the world!

Would You Open This Box?

Would You Open This Box?

In Jewish folklore, a dybbuk is the term used to reference a ghost or disturbed soul that possesses the body of a living being. The word dates back to the 16th century, which means ‘clinging spirit’ in Yiddish. This is undoubtedly the most appropriate way to describe it. Those who have come in contact with a dybbuk claim they always harbor a restless spirit.

But what are people attempting to accomplish by trapping these spirits? In many stories, the disembodied spirit is unable to move on for various reasons. Firm believers of an afterlife where sinners are punished, attempt to trap the spirit to seek refuge from punishment. Others claim dybbuks are spirits that have unfinished business in the living world. Whatever the reason for the trapped entity, nothing good has ever come from releasing the trapped energy that calls the box home.

The term ‘dybbuk box’ did not come to be until the early 2000’s by an antique collector, Kevin Mannis. According to Manis, he purchased the box at an estate sale in 2003 and was told it was belonged to a Polish Holocaust survivor named Havela, who escaped to Spain and bought the box there. Mannis was able to get in touch with Havela’s granddaughter to offer the safe return of this family heirloom, but she refused to take it back. She said the box had been kept in her grandmother’s sewing room and was never opened because there was a dybbuk living inside of it.

Mannis’ curiosity eventually led to him opening the box. Inside contained two 1920’s pennies, a lock of blonde hair bound with a cord, a lock of darker colored hair also bound, a small statue engraved with the Hebrew word “Shalom”, a small golden wine goblet, one dried rose bud and a single candle holder with four octopus shaped legs. He eventually sold the box but each owner would sell it quickly after. Numerous owners claimed the box brought on strange phenomenons and they were always extremely unnerving. Some complained of smelling cat urine and experiencing demonic nightmares while others developed strange health problems like, hives, coughing up blood or losing their hair.

Youtuber TheOmarGoshTV recently did a series about a dybbuk box he bought from eBay. In his videos, that you can watch here, he brings the haunted box to an already haunted house. The house was so haunted that the owners up an left, leaving behind much of their personal belongings. After some research, Omar discovered that the house belonged to a traveling doctor. His assumption is that the doctor got involved with some form of spiritual healing and encountered an evil entity that followed him home and tormented his family. In his videos, you can see the contents of the box, hear the sounds of objects moving around in the background and even witness the giant chandler in the hallway moving. After finding out that the house was purchased, Omar decided to remove the box and do a proper cleansing of the home for the future owners. He plans on burying the box or dropping it deep in the ocean.

These spirit filled boxes can be easily purchased on eBay and other online sites. It may sound like a thrill but before dabbling with demonic energy, you should make sure you know what you're in for. Would you open this box?

The Screaming Bridge of Maud Hughes Road

By Kris M

The Screaming Bridge of Maud Hughes Road

Many urban legends surround this bridge and tell of quite sinister tales. Located in Liberty Township in Ohio, the Screaming Bridge has been spooking locals since the 1870’s. The bridge has a reputation of death and pure sorrow. Those who have visited claim to hear the scream of the sorry souls who met their demise beneath the lonely bridge.

One of the earliest tragedies linked to the bridge involved a railroad accident in which two men were burned alive when the train exploded. But the ‘Screaming Bridge’ could possibly derive from one of the other tragic events that occurred in the area. One story tells of an arguing couple crossing the bridge in which the woman was pushed to he death. Another tells of a couple whose car broke down. The guy went for help and when he returned discovered a horrendous scene. His girlfriend was dead, hanging beneath the bridge. Reports of phantom trains or engineers on the tracks below are the most popular rumors about the bridge. A 1909 accident killed two engineers and injured three others aboard the train. Another tragedy struck in 1976 when a Penn Centeral employee was killed when a train penetrated the part of the train he was working on.

Due to the many deaths in and around the area involving train and railroad accidents, there’s a good chance that these rumors will come alive if you visit.

The Cannibal Pink Mist of the Tomoka River

By Kris M

The Cannibal Pink Mist of the Tomoka River

You’re in the woods and get an eerie sense that you're being followed. You find the courage to turn your head and catch a glimpse of a strange pink mist that seems to be following you. This was the reality for locals in the woods along the Tomoka River west of Daytona. Between 1955 and 1966, numerous people reported a pink misty cloudy trailing closely behind them. The fog was said to swallow you whole and hug the ground, blocking anything near. Many have speculated the cause for the unusual fog over the years. The more logical theory is that it’s linked to pollution which causes the sunlight to reflect a pinkish tinge. But there is one major problem with that theory. In those days, this rural area was far from any industrial pollution.

The mist has been blamed for at least a dozen disappearances in the area. One local story suggests a connection between the pink mist and an Indian legend. Chief Tomkie disobeyed local religious practices by stealing a golden cup and drinking from a divine spring that  was said to bless you with special healing powers. Nearby tribes retaliated by attacking Tommie’s band. Tomkie miraculously survived the battled, escaping untouched. Indian maiden Oleeta wasn’t going to let the thief get away and struck Tomkie with an arrow straight through his heart. As she rushed to retrieve the stolen golden cup, she was struck with a poisoned arrow. She was found dead, still clinging to the golden cup. The sacred cup is said to be in possession of Florida Indians until this day. Tomkie’s spirit still wanders his old land in the mists of the Tomoka River. Could Tomkie have anything to do with the strange pink clouds?

Other local legends tell of balls of glowing red and white lights hovering just above the ground near the mist. Some claim they know someone who was devoured by the pink fog. Rumor has it that the mist will eat the flesh from your bones. This could explain why the missing bodies were never found. Some have even nicknamed it ‘The Cannibal Cloud.’

Island of Death: Poveglia

Island of Death: Poveglia

Poveglia, Italy is literally the island of death. This very illegal place to explore sits just off the coast of northern Italy near Venice. This haunted island once housed thousands of refugee black plague victims, many of which were quarantined in undesirable conditions. The history of this island dates as far back to the Roman Empire and Medieval time periods. Due to the uncontrollable amount of plague deaths, bodies were dumped in large mass graves and forgotten about. Because of the insane amount of deceased bodies, the soil has turned rotten. More than 50% of the island’s soil is said to be made up of human ash. Despite the human remains, harvesters still visit the island to obtain the grapes growing amongst the ashy soil.

The island would again become the home for ill patients in 1922. The desolation made it the perfect spot for a mental hospital and it would quickly gain a grime reputation. Doctors and scientists were said to do as they pleased with the patients. Reports of wide spread abuse and wicked experiments were the talk of the town back on the mainland. The worst acts were committed by a demented doctor who was notorious for performing lobotomies on patients against their will. Not only were the procedures painful, they were incredibly heinous too. He reportedly used hammers, chisels and drills without any concern for proper sanitation or the use of anesthetic. He saved his favorite and more infamous experiments for the bell tower. The screams of his tortured patients haunted the staff and other patients for years. The doctor eventually developed a mental illness of his own and flung himself off the top of the bell tower. After torturing thousands upon thousands of innocent souls, it comes to no surprise he went insane.

100,000 plague victims and mental patients buried on the small island of Poveglia seems to be too much for it to handle. Human bones continue to wash up on its shores and even fishermen refuse to get anywhere near to avoid picking up bones in their nets. Visitors have reported being pushed and scratched and others were severely creeped out by the island's remaining aesthetic.

Urban explorers and other thrill seekers who have found a way to access Poveglia say they have no desire to ever return.

America's Most Haunted Hotel

America's Most Haunted Hotel

When Marty and Eilse Roenigk purchased the Crescent Hotel in 1997, they weren’t too sure what they were getting into. The hotel has been notoriously haunted and proven to have a few resident ghosts staying at the hotel. Ghosthunters and other paranormal groups have collected enough evidence to prove something otherworldly is happening inside of there. The couple inherited a host of spirits and paranormal activity that they quickly grew very interested in. While previous owners attempted to hide the ghostly encounters, Marty and Elise took great pride in their new friends and turned the hauntingly beautiful structure into America’s most haunted hotel.

The Crescent Hotel was built in 1886 and is located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Guests have reported numerous ghosts that all have a story to tell, including a cat named Morris. An Irish stonemason, Michael, who fell to his death while building the hotel seems to pop up in the area where he died. Theodora, a cancer patient of the infamous Dr. Baker seems to wander the halls looking for her room. The most unsettling of tragedies can be blamed on Dr. Baker himself. The crazed doctor turned the hospital into a cancer treatment center and claimed he could cure even the the most fatal types of the disease. He quickly gained a sinister reputation for his experimental and fatal treatments. Families of the deceased eventually caught onto his madness and took him to court.

Dr. Baker was finally sentenced after years of torturing his ill patients. He didn’t seem to have much remorse for his unnerving experiments and even commented, “If I could keep my radio station open, I would make a million dollars out of the suckers of the states.”

He was found to be delusional by the jail’s psychiatrist. If only the patients knew about his insanity, maybe they would have survived their sickness.

Sit With Satan on the Devil’s Chair

Sit With Satan on the Devil’s Chair

Could this chair really belong to Satan himself? Bringing you yet another infamous graveyard of Florida, the grave located in Lake Helen Cassadaga Cemetery supposedly marks the resting place of ‘El Diablo’ or whatever you’d like to call him. Legend has it, if you sit on the archaic brick chair at midnight, the devil will join you.

But what makes this chair so special? Many cemeteries have memorial chairs scattered throughout them. It is said that this particular chair was built for an elderly man to sit and visit with his wife. However, local folklore has twisted up more sinister ideas. Locals and paranormal investigators flock to the cemetery daily for a chance to meet the negative entity attached to the chair. People report encountering shadow people lurking around the sight and ghost hunters have caught numerous creepy EVPs. The G Team Paranormal recorded a session at the chair and caught some interesting voices coming through their spirit box. Trust me, this team is the real deal!

You can check out Patty and Marie at the Devil’s Chair from G Team Paranormal here

By the way, if you leave a bottle of beer on the chair it will be empty by morning. Sometimes the bottle remains unopened but the beer inside is gone...

That's one thirsty devil!

The Black Bird Creature of Chernobyl

By Kris M

The Black Bird Creature of Chernobyl

Much of the world is familiar with the infamous Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion. The town was forced to leave their lives behind in a frantic scurry to escape the harmful environment that they called home. Beginning in early April 1986, people around the area began experiencing a series of strange sightings of a large, dark, and headless man with giant wings and flaming red eyes. The sightings were followed by haunting nightmares, threatening phone calls and encounters with the devilish beast himself.

The ‘Mothman’ has been spotted throughout many areas of the world. Often times, a catastrophic event followed these sightings. In late April of 1986, the nuclear power plan suffered from a cataclysmic steam explosion. Interestingly, this tragic event struck directly after the sighting of the winged beast, almost as if the creature was an omen of what was to come. When the emergency crew arrived, many reported seeing a large, dark winged figure rising above the flames. Over 500 witnesses have come forward over the years to share what they had scene.

The Mothman is known to be an omen for death and disaster. One of its most notorious sightings occurred in the old West Virginia Ordinance in an area known as the ‘TNT Area’. The facility was used during WWI to manufacture ammunition and dynamite. Mainly a large wooded area, it also contained large concrete trenches built into the mountains that held TNT. Much of the area consisted of underground maze tunnels with random loads of gunpowder. Needless to say, this place was a destruction waiting to happen. The area was left abandoned after the war with all of its contents, becoming an environmental disaster by 1983. Many sightings have made headlines in the area surrounding the TNT base stirring up an unsettling reputation. In 2010, the underground shelters that housed the 20,0000 pounds of unstable materials suddenly exploding. As with the Chernobyl explosion, witnesses claim to have encountered a winged beast in the skies right before the disaster.

Some believe the Mothman to be an angel warning the living. Others believe it to be a demon or a curse. We may never know for sure but one thing is certain. Devilish red glowing eyes and gigantic black wings hovering over a blaze of uncontrollable fire does not sit well with me.
